Only Install one antivirus and one firewall. Using more then one of those types of applications on the same computer can cause conflicts and slowdown.

The above programs are known to provide an adequate level of protection and none of them will cost you a cent. However, these are not the only good security programs available. When selecting a security application its also important to make sure that they are not on this list: Rogue/Suspect Anti-Spyware Products & Web Sites. The programs on that list are not real security applications and are meant to trick users into paying for software that they do not need and sometimes they are even malware themselves.
 



Other Excellent Free Programs


OpenOffice
OpenOffice.org is an open-source, multiplatform and multilingual office suite comparable to MS Office. It can create and edit Microsoft Word(.doc), Powerpoint(.ppt), and even Excel(.xls) files. Great for students and those working from home.

VLC Media Player
VLC (initially VideoLAN Client) is a highly portable multimedia player for various audio and video formats (MPEG-1, MPEG-2, MPEG-4, DivX, mp3, ogg...) as well as DVDs, VCDs, and various streaming protocols. It can also be used as a server to stream in unicast or multicast in IPv4 or IPv6 on a high-bandwidth network.

Winamp
Nullsoft Winamp is a fast, flexible, high-fidelity music and video player for Windows. Winamp supports MP3, CD, WAV and other audio formats, custom appearances called skins, plus audio visualization and audio effect plug-ins. additional features including free-form skins, a new decoder, built-in cross fade, and an advanced Media Library

Foobar2000
Foobar2000 is an advanced audio player for the Windows platform. Some of the basic features include ReplayGain support, low memory footprint and native support for several popular audio formats.

Picasa
Picasa is software that helps you instantly find, edit and share all the pictures on your PC. Every time you open Picasa, it automatically locates all your pictures (even ones you forgot you had) and sorts them into visual albums organized by date with folder names you will recognize. You can drag and drop to arrange your albums and make labels to create new groups. Picasa makes sure your pictures are always organized. Paint.net
Paint.NET is image and photo manipulation software designed to be used on computers that run XP, Server 2003 or Vista. It started development at Washington State University as an undergraduate senior design project mentored by Microsoft, and is currently being maintained by some of the alumni that originally worked on it. It is meant to be a free replacement for the MS Paint software that comes with all Windows operating systems. Paint.NET has many of the powerful features that expensive commercial applications have, including the ability to use layers.

Zip Genius
ZipGenius has all the main features of compression programs (zip, unzip and so on), but it's different from the others because it offers very special features. You can give better protection to your archives using encryption instead of the standard zip password, you can send e-mail using the built-in mail client or you can publish archives on the Web with FTPGenius, the built-in FTP client.

7-Zip
7-Zip is an open source file archiver predominantly for the Microsoft Windows operating system. It operates either as a command line program or with a graphical user interface. It also features integration with the Windows shell environment. 7-Zip is free software, distributed under the GNU LGPL license.

Thunderbird
Thunderbird is a great email client from the same people who brought you the Firefox browser. Thunderbird gives you IMAP/POP support, a built-in RSS reader, support for HTML mail, powerful quick search, saved search folders, advanced message filtering, message grouping, labels, return receipts, smart address book LDAP address completion, import tools, and the ability to manage multiple e-mail and newsgroup accounts.

Foxit PDF
Foxit Reader is a free reader for PDF documents. You can view and print PDF documents with it. The download size is around 1MB, so you can download it quickly. It doesn't need any lengthy installation, so you can start to run it as soon as  you can download it. It starts up immediately, so you don't need to wait the annoying "Welcome" screen to disappear.

Pidgin
Pidgin (previously called Gaim) is a multi-protocol instant messaging (IM) client for Linux, BSD, MacOS X, and Windows. It is compatible with AIM and ICQ (Oscar protocol), MSN Messenger, Yahoo!, IRC, Jabber, Gadu-Gadu, SILC, GroupWise Messenger, and Zephyr networks.

CCleaner
CCleaner (formerly Crap Cleaner) is a freeware system optimization and privacy tool. It removes unused and temporary files from your system - allowing Windows to run faster, more efficiently and giving you more hard disk space. The best part is that it's fast! (normally taking less than a second to run) and Free.
